Overcoming perfectionism to obey God

Zendre asked me if I wanted to join the Media team. While I’m a tech-savvy person, my recovering perfectionist side couldn’t bear the idea of getting the slides wrong and having everyone turn around to see who was running them. I figured I’d be much more comfortable standing at the entrance welcoming people or having coffee with visitors—something that appeals to the extrovert in me.

I shared my concerns, and she encouraged me to just come and observe. As I sat with Katherine, one Sunday, I kept thinking, “Nope, there’s no way I’m doing this.” But as the service continued, I started to realize it wasn’t so bad. So I agreed to give it a go.

ESCC has a great system for training. First, Katherine did it while I watched. The next time, I did it while Katherine watched. And finally, I was ready to fly solo. Now, about two months later, I get to buddy up with someone new who is training.

Turns out, I really enjoy it! As an added bonus, doing the slides helps me stay focused on the service with greater intensity.

We all have places where we feel more comfortable serving, and that’s great. But sometimes, the greatest need is exactly where God is calling us to step in—even if it’s out of our comfort zone. – Laura
