From dealing with cancer to becoming miracle parents
“My son Keegan had just become engaged to his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, Carmen who had moved to America with her family. He was back home in South Africa planning to join her in a few month’s time. A few weeks later, she video-called him with the bad news that she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her chemo treatment was set to start soon, so Keegan couldn’t be with her for her first treatment but arrived there in time for her second treatment.
Carmen was in an out of hospital with a number of infections and by January she was so weak they thought she was going to die. Keegan phoned us and said that they couldn’t wait for a formal wedding to be planned as he didn’t feel there was sufficient time. Carmen and Keegan were married in January and that same day she was rushed to the hospital with very bad pneumonia. Keegan began nursing her back to health through all her chemo sessions, making her eat and drink only to benefit the health of her body.
Carmen completed her chemo and after a full mastectomy and reconstruction, she slowly started to recover.
At that stage they were living in Chicago close to Carmen’s family, however, they discussed moving to Florida as Chicago was very cold for Carmen. They planned a holiday to Florida to explore before making the move. At this same time, they started to discuss starting a family so they went off to see the doctor who told them that there was a less than 1% chance of Carmen falling pregnant after her chemo. They would have to go the IVF route – Carmen did have frozen eggs stored.
They planned to start this process soon after their trip to Florida.
While in Florida they visited the beach on their last day there and as they were walking off the beach they noticed a large tent with something going on inside. As they passed the tent an evangelist asked if there was anything they needed prayer for. Carmen said yes, she wanted to desperately have a baby naturally. A group of evangelists prayed over both Carmen and Keegan.
When they got home to Chicago, a surgeon friend who lived in Ireland and who went to school with Keegan and Carmen visited them. Anike did not know that they wanted to have a baby but she was convinced that Carmen was pregnant. Eventually, a very distressed Carmen went to take a few home pregnancy tests which all turned out to be positive. A further blood test with the doctor proved positive too. Carmen was pregnant naturally!
They later found out that she was carrying twin boys.
As Carmen’s belly grew she became healthier and her baby boys grew stronger. On Wednesday 14th of June Keegan and Carmen became the proud parents of two beautiful little boys that are both strong and healthy.
God planned this path for both of them long before they ever knew they would marry. He planned everything in such detail that it would leave you in awe if I told you all the details. God has his finger on the pulse all the time and never abandons you in your hour of need. He is always there and never lets you down.” – Jane Moore
